Rinkel abroad: roaming costs, making calls and receiving calls

How Rinkel works when you're abroad — when you do or don’t pay roaming charges, which countries are supported, and how to use the Webphone to avoid extra costs.

Written by Shay Phan

Travelling, working abroad for a few weeks, or outside the EU? With Rinkel, you stay reachable on your business number. Here's everything about costs, supported countries, and how to use the Webphone to avoid roaming charges entirely.

Call via the Webphone

Want to be sure you won't pay anything extra? Use the Rinkel Webphone. It works over your internet connection.

How to turn on the Webphone

  1. Log in to MyRinkel.

  2. Click the Webphone icon in the bottom right of your screen.

  3. Allow microphone access if your browser asks for it.

  4. You're now reachable via the Webphone — incoming calls come straight through.

Google Chrome works best. Want to make the Webphone even more convenient? Install the Rinkel Webphone Chrome extension.

Ringing on both the Webphone and your mobile at the same time

Not always at your laptop? Set things up so calls come in on both devices at once:

  1. In MyRinkel, click your profile icon in the top right.

  2. Go to Profile.

  3. Go to Call preferences and select Preferences.

  4. Turn off "Silence other devices when the Webphone is active".

  5. Click Save.

Calls will now ring on both your Webphone and your mobile. Answer on whichever works best — no wifi on your laptop? No problem, your mobile works too.

Does Rinkel charge extra when you're abroad?

No. Rinkel doesn't charge anything extra for use abroad. Whether you're in Belgium or Spain — you call and receive calls on your Rinkel number just as you would at home.

What can happen: your mobile provider may charge roaming fees if you call or answer via the Rinkel app on your mobile. That has nothing to do with Rinkel — it's part of your mobile contract.

Why does the provider charge for this? ❗ The Rinkel app on your mobile works via the regular mobile network, not over the internet (no VoIP). That gives you stable call quality, even with poor wifi — but abroad, your provider's roaming settings apply.

Which countries does Rinkel work in?

Rinkel works in all countries we can forward calls to. That's over 50, including the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Austria, the Scandinavian countries, the UK and the United States.

  • Call via the Webphone. This works in all countries we support — including those where the mobile network route doesn't work. You call from your Rinkel number to the Netherlands (or another supported country) and receive the callback on your Webphone. Please note: the Webphone doesn't work in a handful of countries, such as Paraguay, Bolivia, Sri Lanka and Réunion. A full list of supported countries is below.

  • Calling on your mobile only works with a SIM card from a supported country. A local SIM card from Paraguay or Sri Lanka, for example, won't work with the Rinkel app — including an eSIM without a phone number.

Available destinations (alphabetical):

Australia, Austria, Bangladesh, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Mongolia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, United Kingdom, United States.

Making calls from abroad

There are two ways to call from your Rinkel number while you're abroad:

Via the Rinkel app on your mobile

  • Open the Rinkel app and tap the keypad icon.

  • Enter the number you want to call.

  • Tap the green call button and answer the incoming call from your own Rinkel number.

Via the Webphone on your laptop or computer

  • Turn on the Webphone in MyRinkel.

  • Enter the number and click the green call button.

No roaming charges, no provider in the middle. You do need an internet connection.

Receiving calls abroad

Someone calls your Rinkel business number while you're abroad. What happens?

The call comes through on whichever device is set up in your call forwarding:

  • Webphone active? The call comes in over the internet — no roaming charges.

  • Call forwarding to your mobile? The call comes in over the mobile network; your provider may charge roaming fees.

  • Both active? It rings on both devices at the same time (see the setting above under "Ringing on both the Webphone and your mobile").

Not working? First check how call forwarding is set up for your Rinkel number. Go to Number settings > Call forwarding in MyRinkel.

Frequently asked questions

I use the Rinkel app on my mobile. Can I turn roaming off from there?

No. The Rinkel app works via your mobile provider's network — that's not something you can switch off in the app. Want to avoid roaming charges? Use the Webphone.

Does the Webphone work outside the EU too?

Yes, anywhere you have internet — whether you're in New York or São Paulo. The Webphone works as long as you have a connection.

I have a foreign eSIM with data only. Does the Rinkel app work with that?

No. The Rinkel app needs a mobile phone number to work. A data-only eSIM isn't enough. In that case, the Webphone is the solution.

Can I get a foreign number through Rinkel?

Yes, for many countries you can add a local number to your subscription. Useful if you work with a lot of clients in that country. Find out more in "International numbers".

I'm not receiving calls abroad. What do I do?

Check three things in MyRinkel:

  • Is your user profile included in the call forwarding for your Rinkel number?

  • Do you have the Webphone turned on if you want to receive calls over the internet?

  • Do you have internet or mobile signal on the device calls should come through to?
